At Vision Arch, we truly believe that all our people – from commercial teams, to designers, to project managers – are our most valuable assets. So many businesses in the construction sector assert this same sentiment – but, during what is an increasingly challenging economic period, how are employers tangibly prioritising their workforce? What does it mean to constructively invest in your people as a commercial glazing business, and why is this so important?

What does it mean to ‘invest’ in your people?

Investing in the people of a business means the prioritisation of leadership, support and improvement, all of which enrich and empower the business’s wider ambition. Accountable and transparent company leadership; employee support and measurable performance management; and constant improvement and career progression – all of these need to be included and promoted.

People are the most valuable commodity to any business, but particularly given the complex projects and collaborations required in commercial glazing, they are, without doubt, the driving force behind our organisation’s success.

What is the return on investment in your people?

Vision Arch is in a period of growth, and as we transition into a larger business, it is essential that we spend time and resource on evaluating our management structure. We know that by leading, supporting and developing the people who work with and for Vision Arch, we will not only see an increase in productivity and profitability, but also create an attractive and welcoming working environment.

The business benefits of staff retention seem so obvious but are often overlooked by organisations who view culture and HR as tick boxes rather than vital policies deserving of earnest commitment. Whilst businesses focus on marketing themselves to prospective clients, the importance of considering your ‘internal audience’ – your own employees – should never be underestimated. It is not very often that SMEs in the construction sector are able to celebrate their culture, but Vision Arch makes a commitment to a detailed people strategy and initiatives that benefit our staff.

Retention aside, we also want to ensure we can compete for new talent, as we are always looking to find the most suitable candidates to join us on our journey. It is really important that we build a progressive and innovative workforce – ultimately, projects and collaborations in our sector are all about problem solving and working to exceed client expectations. Fresh and different views fortify our offering and ensure we can deliver on our commitment to excellence.

Tangible examples of the ways that we seek to continue our investment in people include our transparent display of our HR policies – presented on our careers page – along with our current commitment to and ongoing application for an Investors in People accreditation.
