Client brief

Vision Arch were employed to carry out the design development, supply, fabrication, installation and testing of the internal glazed atrium and rooflight overhead.

The requirement was that the glass would span from floor to ceiling without vertical support. This was achieved through desktop dynamic modelling to ensure the unsupported glass panels could withstand the barrier loadings.
Visually the architect required a flush finish so a bespoke carrier extrusion was designed where the glass is structurally bonded to it and then mechanically fixed back to the supporting framework.

Our scope

An immaculate reinvention of a substantial office building opposite the Central Criminal Court in the diverse and dynamic heart of London. The scheme including reconfiguration of core areas included a new 9-storey internal atrium glazed fixed rooflight overhead.

The atrium sits centrally to 235,000 sq ft of exceptionally designed office space, set around a pioneering ‘arterial street’. The atrium and rooflight have brought much needed natural light deep into the plan of the office floors and also provides a focal point along the street at the ground floor reception.

Key challenges

Challenge 1

Planning and delivering the lifting operation of all curtain walling materials and glass through the rooflight opening above the atrium to allow the building to be closed off.

Challenge 2

Design new extrusions to achieve the architectural intent as well as structural performance.

“”

The result

The glazed atrium, rising the entire height of the 9-storey building, brings natural light deep into the plan of the office floors, perfectly illuminating the lower ground floor.
