Client brief

This geometrically complex structurally glazed bridge provides pedestrians a vital link from the existing town centre to Westfield’s Stratford City project. Spanning over the train line at Stratford Station, the full height glazed facades along each side of the bridge played a crucial role in allowing millions of people safe access to the Olympic Park, while adding an impressive, modern feature to the surrounding landscape.

Our scope

This project is completely bespoke, incorporating new dies for both the half mullions and transoms.

The mullions and transoms were cut and welded into frames, in the UK, then shipped to Austria where the glass was processed and then structurally bonded into the frames.

The completed assemblies were then packed in crates for shipping back to the UK where they were unpacked and lifted into position onto the bridge.

Every single frame and glass panel is unique due to the geometrical complexities of the bridge facade.

Light boxes were installed, one for every two panels of glass to align with the Vierendeel trusses. Again each light box is unique.

Key challenges

Challenge 1

Working over a live railway throughout the works.

Challenge 2

Managing the trans-European logistics.

The result

Chief among numerous complex constraints was how to economically and safely install the structure while maintaining rail movements and the activities of the station beneath. The innovative design solution provided a broad 12m-wide deck and fully glazed sides, providing secure enclosure while framing long views to the city.
